Ok, well I'm sure some of you who have been following along are nice and traumatized after that. Some of you may be saying "how could you do that to old tp, he was such a cute lovable guy" well let me tell you about some cinematic experiences I have had with two movies, the original japanese version of "the ring" and "grave of the fireflys".

This is a bit of an embarrassing story but when I was first getting into J-horror I heard alot of good things about this movie called "the ring", this was before the american release so I had to find a pirated version of it to watch it. At the time I was staying at an apartment so I could take my college classes away from home. So I was watching the ring alone in the dark and damn was that movie ever spooky. The aura of impending doom on the family that had watched the tape was unsettling and you knew something really bad was coming. For the first time in a very long time a movie actually had me spooked, spooked so much I couldnt finish it alone and watched the rest with a freind later. But boy was I ever dissapointed, all that build up of doom and it ended in a fairly unsatisfying way. That had to be the worse case of cinematic blue balls I ever had. To me, the ring could have beenthe scariest horror movie of all time if they had just followed through on what they were building up for and gone all the way.

On the other hand we have grave of the fireflies, this is a very different movie, but the one thing it has in common with the ring is you know something really bad will happen to its protagonists and it very slowly builds up to that. You want to see its protagonists make it, but you know by all rights their pretty much doomed and boy do they ever not make it. Grave of the fireflies actually follows through with that, to me that was a much more satisfying story because of that. But yeah the point is a more merciful author may have simply faded to black and gone back to the regular story after the last page, but for me that would have felt like a cop out.

Anyway one lst thing is I think I'll talk a bit about the occult allusions on this page. The abyss, refers to the sphere of Daath on the tree of life, it is said that none can cross the abyss with their ego remaining intact. One possible interpretation of what happens on this page is that as TP is crossing the abyss, K-5 isn't annihilating his physical body, but what is left of his scarred ego. Why did she take his eyeball though? We'll just have to wait and see.

Next time we will be going back to our regular story, where I'm sure everything is happy and nothing bad is happening at all...

I kinda liked how "Ringu" too. For me it's the mystery and the 'not showing' just hinting that makes a movie truly scary for me.
Grave of the Fireflies is so beautiful, and leaves you traumatized at the same time. What's sad is the cruelty and lack of charity amongst the Japanese people.

Yeah I agree with the air of mystery too, a better ending may have been to have the family found after all it was over dead with looks of terror on their faces without it being exactly clear what happened to them, though the issue with that is they didn't all watch the tape at once, so that little kink would need to be worked out, maybe make it a longer film to properly have the progression of events play out?

Also yeah I agree about grave as well, I mean it's not my favorite miyazaki film but it did things that I haven't seen any other film do. It's not so much a film about war as it is about the innocent people caught up in situations a war can cause.

Can't say I fault your choices for your story. For one, it is your story. Second, only in wishy washy fantasy do you have happy endings. True existence is far more grim. No guarantees of even making a difference, much less actually succeeding. Only people who will care about you are the ones who have gotten to know you well. Everyone else will just be too wrapped up in their own version of reality to take note. And in time all your works, for good or for ill, will be forgotten.

When two of the main characters in a story have the goal of destroying another reality to save their own...why should it be less grim than actual existence? Perhaps it is better to pull no punches so that when that final curtain call does come we can give an enthusiastic applause.

Yeah, this chapter was actually my favorite one to work on, just because it has alot of really intense stuff in it. Up until now PG hasn't been a very serious story but now and then it will have moments like this.
